Day after day in 2002, the Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team was unearthing secrets that had been kept in the Roman Catholic crypt. The bones of tens of thousands of children who had been sexually abused by priests had been found. It was revealed that the crimes had been covered up, and the perpetrators moved to unsuspecting parishes to molest again and again. Church administrators were given clear directives on how to avoid prosecution by hiding the criminals and silencing the victims. A soul corroding contagion was allowed to spread, psychological wounds festered, and childhoods were infected with fear. Adult¬hoods were crippled, as priests donned robes, lifted The Word, and proclaimed themselves to be moral leaders. This is the story of how one man remembered that he was a victim when he read those articles in the Globe. It is the story of how he came to terms with this, and how he then turned his tragedy into a victory for himself, and for others. Through the power of his witness, with the power of his truth, and in the emancipation of his voice this one man stands as an example for others to see. He makes a call for others to hear, and offers a way for those suffering under the weight of secrets to be freed. This man tells his story.

Luke 172 A Memoir of Abuse Recovery and Triumph MR Michael Emerton MR Patrick Emerton Books

This book is an account of the Catholic clergy abuse scandal written by a man who loves the Catholic church. It is a true story and is set in Massachusetts. The author was a victim of this abuse as an adolescent and knew or knew of several others who were hurt by this. He kept his pain a secret well into adulthood. But that's only the beginning of this story.
As an adult, Michael had acquired professional skills and connections that became very helpful in organizing, researching and moving forward with the exposure and persecution of the abusive clergy as well as those who helped to cover up that abuse over and over again. It was not part of his plan... he'd planned to leave the abuse in the past and never to speak of it again, but he was not able to do that. Once the memories started to resurface, they became louder and louder and would not be silenced again.
Although the subject is a heavy one, Michael's writing is easy to read. I highly recommend this book.

Luke 172 A Memoir of Abuse Recovery and Triumph MR Michael Emerton MR Patrick Emerton Books Reviews

A wonderful book about a young boy who was molested by his trusting parish priest. The book is a true account. I thought the author may dwell on his past, but I was wrong. He uses his experience, as an adult, to work for change within the Catholic Church. Very well written.
Luke 172

Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. The author fluently takes you though his journey of inner demons to inner peace. He speaks truthfully and holds nothing back. This book reminds me of Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes.
Luke 172 is powerful and to the point. It is an amazing story of courage and perseverance. This personal account of the much larger story really hits home
hard. Thought provocating. Together people can prevail. The story is very local to me and I was fortunate to meet the 2 Emerton brothers. There was a bigger power at work here.
This is the story of a man who comes to terms with his own past and helps other survivors to find some peace as they call on the Roman Church to be held accountable. It is a story of bravery and persistence.
This very well written, easy reading true story brought out so many emotions as I was reading it..... Sadness to the point of tears for all the innocent, young victims; anger and disgust at the pedophile priests and their superiors that protected them and relocated them to other parishes where they would, of course, abuse even more children; amazement at the Catholic Church's attitude and acceptance of this atrocity back then and even today. I applaud Michael and Patrick Emerton for their bravery and vigilance in their fight to not only expose this, but to also bring about changes in the Catholic Church.
With the editing help of his brother, Michael Emerton has written a poignant chronicle of his experience as a victim of clerical sexual abuse, and his journey from secret shame to the freeing power of truth. This compelling little book is a fast moving page-turner and an inspiring testimony to Mike's courage, humility, perseverance and integrity. It will resonate with victims, and for others, it will raise awareness of the danger signs of potential abuse. But most of all, this well-written account is proof of the power of love and the certainty that many voices can make a difference in the world.
As a former Catholic, the horrors of church sanctioned and church supported abuse were not news to me. Nonetheless, this book brought the drama home in a way for which I was not prepared. A deep, personal, intensely moving narrative, this courageous book turns the scandal inside out from its roots in Boston and the waves of abuse beyond. It makes the reprehensible actions and self-protective motivation of vile hypocrites like Archbishop Law and his minions incredibly clear, and shows the power of the people to inform and persuade and effect change.
